When Sarah is not doing peer support\, she is typically on the back of a horse as an avid equestrian. \n\n\n\nOryx Cohen: Oryx Cohen is the Chief Operating Officer of the National Empowerment Center. Oryx is a board member of the Hearing Voices Network USA and Empatiko\, and an Emotional CPR trainer. Oryx co-produced and is a subject in the award-winning social action documentary HEALING VOICES\, which was released in April 2016. Oryx lives with his wife and two children in Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nDan Sullivan: Scientist. Athlete. Professor. Hello\, I’m Dan Sullivan and I’m none of these things. DESCRIPTION:Cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and drummer Tomas Fujiwara incorporate all manner of inspiration into their purely musical dialogues to celebrate the roots and branches of jazz.  \n\n\n\nTomas Fujiwara is a bandleader\, composer and drummer who is a member of the trio Thumbscrew\, plays as a duo with Taylor Ho Bynum\, and is a supporting member in other groups led by Bynum\, Halvorson\, Matana Roberts\, Tomeka Reid\, Amir ElSaffar\, and Nicole Mitchell.  \n\n\n\nTaylor Ho Bynum is a bandleader and cornetist whose recent works include the 4-album set Navigation (2013) with his Sextet and 7-tette from the Firehouse 12 Records label \, and Enter the Plustet (2016)\, the debut recording of his 15-piece creative orchestra. One of his endeavors is the Acoustic Bicycle Tours where he travels to concerts solely by bike across thousands of miles.  \n\n\n\nThis installment of Free Jazz at The Sanctuary is supported by New Music USA.

DESCRIPTION:We are a research group based out of Cornell University’s Community and Regional Development Institute (CaRDI). Working in partnership with the Hudson River Estuary Program and the NYS Water Research Institute\, we are exploring increased flood risk and responses in New York State. The current focus of our project is on the city of Troy. We are seeking to learn how past flooding has impacted residents and how flood risk impacts people in their day-to-day lives. We are currently recruiting people to participate in focus groups on life in Troy and how it relates to the river and waterfront. The first focus group will meet in North Troy on Tuesday\, May 15 at 6pm. The second focus group will be in South Troy on Wednesday\, May 16 at 4pm.  Each group will last for approximately 2 hours. Drinks and snacks will be provided as well as a $25 gift card to thank participants for their time.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final celebration of the 2018 Uptown Summer youth employment program and see what we’ve been working on! At 1pm\, architect Cameron Toler will be presenting the NATURE Lab prototypes generated from last week’s community design think tank. Then\, we’ll watch a few short films about the Uptown Summer program and hear the finished radio pieces the youth employees have been laboring over for the past five weeks. The youth were tasked with sharing stories of environmental justice and resilience. Expect to hear them report on topics including gardening\, negligent landlords\, and police brutality. The Uptown Summer ’18 programming has been absolutely packed with diverse guests\, eye-opening workshops\, and hands-on skill-building. We are excited to share what we’ve learned\, discovered\, and created!

DESCRIPTION:A deep roots trio made up of guitarist and vocalist Pascal Danae\, Rafgee on sousaphone and drummer Baptiste Brondy\, blending French Caribbean and New Orleans’ musical styles for a contemporary Creole blues sound with an African flair. Named for Officer Louis Delgrès\, the band pays tribute to the forgotten hero\, a biracial man who spent his life actively resisting colonial forces in Guadeloupe and died in battle fighting Napoleon’s enforced reinstatement of slavery in 1802. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trio was founded by award winning Guadelupean composer and musician Pascal Danae who was inspired by  New Orleans jazz fusion\, and brought together drummer Baptiste (with whom he had played previously in the band Rivière Noire) and experienced jazz horn player Raphael ‘Rafgee’ Gouthière\, on a whim\, to produce a critically acclaimed\, radical roots group. The group sings mainly in Creole\, with dance worthy tracks that encourage pause and reflection. Their debut album Mo Jodi was released in 2018\, and can be purchased here.

Just as farmers reap the harvest\, providing sustenance for all\, it is time to celebrate all our harvests–the results of seeds sown through art\, education\, agriculture\, tolerance\, and everything we do to build strong\, healthy\, tolerant communities. Expect fun\, Caribbean-inspired tunes from Rootbrew on the Freedom Square stage. SUMMARY:Roots for Resilience Exhibition Opening with Catherine Rafferty
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening Wednesday\, Sept. 26\, 6-7pm\, with photographer Catherine Rafferty! \n\n\n\nDuring her internship at The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, Catherine Rafferty photographed the images in this exhibition during the Uptown Summer 2018 program. Born in Albany\, she is working toward a BFA in Photojournalism at Rochester Institute of Technology. She is currently the photography editor for Reporter Magazine at RIT. Catherine’s interests are in telling stories of environmental justice\, gentrification\, immigration and health care. Her focus is on understanding communities and social relationships. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom monitoring eel populations in the Poestenkill\, to painting “poetic crosswalks\,” to leading a community design process\, the eighth season of Uptown Summer was filled with remarkable projects and exciting workshops. In partnership with the Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Justice programs\, the Sanctuary offered local teens a chance to learn hands-on skills while enriching their community. These experiences are captured in this extensive photo collection now on display in our Underground Gallery.  \n\n\n\nThe youth in these photos focused sharing stories of environmental justice and resilience. Working alongside scientists\, artists\, and community leaders\, they explored diverse realms including data analysis\, seed-saving\, and the health of Hudson River fish. The 2018 Uptown Summer crew left their mark on the neighborhood with the new NATURE Lab Environmental Education Center. With the help of the Troy Architecture Project\, we’ll be transforming a long-abandoned building in North Troy into a grassroots science resource for the neighborhood. Design ideas generated by the Uptown Summer youth employees and other community members will provide the framework for the project as it moves forward. The building and gardens will house workshop and meeting spaces\, a science lab\,  a community kitchen\, and much more! \n\n\n\nCatherine was a team member of a small army of interns who contributed their support this summer\, from Rochester Institute of Technology\, Concordia University\, Skidmore College\, the University at Albany\, Sage College\, and Rensselaer. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday October 2nd\, as we kick off the Fall 2018 NATURE Lab Open Hours season with an awesome workshop about what science is\, who gets to do it\, and how knowledge is created. Expect fun activities\, lively discussion\, and more! \n\n\n\nOpen to all ages.  This event takes place at 3334 6th Avenue\, Troy\, NY 12180. \n\n\n\nPlease register here! \n\n\n\nMentor: Maya Sanders \n\n\n\nMaya Sanders is an Undergraduate Sustainability Studies major at RPI. She has a passion for grassroots science\, ecology and environmental science education. Maya was an Uptown Summer mentor with the Sancruary this Summer\, and this Fall she continues her work here\, as an intern\, serving the role of the Sanctuary’s “Community Network Coordinator and Science Educator\,” as well as conducting an ethnographic study on the Sanctuary. \n\n\n\nAbout the NATURE Lab: \n\n\n\nNorth Troy Art\, Technology\, and Urban Research in Ecology (NATURE) Lab is a volunteer-led urban ecology education initiative. Artist/scientist teams work to empower the community with knowledge about the local ecosystem and the skills to intervene in creative ways. Our programming includes community workshops\, public art installations\, artist residencies\, research activities\, and after school activities.
