Thomas Mapfumo has been the musical voice of protest in Zimbabwe and all of southern Africa for nearly half a century. Hero of the anti-apartheid movement in Rhodesia\, then exiled from Zimbabwe because of his vocal criticism of government corruption\, the legendary composer\, guitarist and singer Thomas Mapfumo leads one of the world’s most dangerous dance bands- a nine-piece ensemble celebrating the past\, present and future of African music. Easily the most famous singer in his native country\, Mapfumo continues to live in exile from the regime of Robert Mugabe\, and his music is banned at home.

DESCRIPTION:Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) was born of Malian parents in the Ivory Coast in 1982. As a child she became a member of her father’s dance troupe and was a popular performer of the wildly flailing didadi dance from Wassoulou\, her ancestral home in western Mali. She made the decision to dedicate herself to her passion\, music. Diawara worked to complete an album’s worth of songs and started recording demos for which she composed and arranged all the titles\, as well as playing guitar\, percussion\, bass and singing lead and harmony vocals. An introduction from Oumou Sangaré resulted in a record deal with World Circuit and the recording of her debut album. Perpetuating Mali’s rich traditions with a spectacular contemporary sound all her own\, Diawara has fought the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout the continent and parental opposition to her artistic ambitions to win success as an actress in film and theater before finding her feet in music\, the medium she was always destined to make her own.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday May 15th\, a portal will open between The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy and the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The inimitable Julian Assange\, founder of Wikileaks\, will be piped in from his place of exile to tell participants about the latest and most twisted stories from the bleeding edge of journalism: the exciting business of information liberation in the public interest. This will be the highlight of a brunch experience hosted by the Yes Men. The ingredients will be hand-gathered by Anonymous food-hackers and prepared using secret recipes collected by the Yes Men from notable privacy activists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAssange’s appearance will be introduced by Mike Bonanno from the Yes Men\, who will also show an exclusive\, never-before-seen film from the time The Yes Men learned from Assange that they were being spied on by a private spy firm called Stratfor – and they were invited inside the wikileaks machine to help with the release five million emails that had been liberated from the firm by Anonymous hackers. \n\n\n\nThe super secret\, VIP brunch preceding the Assange appearance will be a totally unique experience. A year in the making\, the menu will feature free-flowing “Adirondack Champagne” (apple cider fermented with sparkling wine yeast) as well as locally gathered flora and fauna – hunted by Tito Ybarra and members of the Sanctuary board. Through actions of tactical media\, the Yes Men primarily aim to raise awareness about what they consider problematic social and political issues. DESCRIPTION:Welcome Penny Lane\, co-founder of The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, as she joins us to celebrate our 10th year anniversary with an in-person presentation of her new documentary NUTS! The Sundance Film Festival sensation\, Lane’s documentary is her good old story about a big fat liar and some goat balls. The film presents an opportunity for viewers to actively wrestle with the ethical and epistemological issues central to the narrative nonfiction form. Because who says smart films have to be boring?  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by iEAR Presents! and RPI’s School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences. \n\n\n\nAbout the film\n\n\n\nNUTS! is a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane about Dr. John Romulus Brinkley\, an eccentric genius who built an empire in Depression-era America with a goat testicle impotence cure and a million-watt radio station. \n\n\n\nUsing animated reenactments\, interviews\, archival footage\, and a hilariously unreliable narrator\, NUTS! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity\, wealth and influence in Depression-era America. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, he transplants tens of thousands of goat testicles; amasses an enormous fortune; is (sort of) elected Governor of Kansas; builds the world’s most powerful radio station; invents junk mail\, the infomercial\, the sound-truck and Border Radio; hosts some epic parties; and annoys the heck out of the establishment\, until finally his audacious actions force the federal government to create regulations to stop him. How he does it\, and what happens when it all comes crashing down\, is the story of NUTS! \n\n\n\nPenny Lane\n\n\n\nPenny Lane was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2012. Her debut feature-length documentary\, Our Nixon\, world premiered at Rotterdam\, had its North American premiere at SXSW\, won the Ken Burns Award for “Best of the Festival” at Ann Arbor\, and was selected as the Closing Night Film at New Directors/New Films. And yes\, Penny Lane is her real name. \n\n\n\nDirector’s Comments\n\n\n\nI started dreaming up a film about John Brinkley in 2009\, after coming across the book Charlatan in my local public library. In conversations with friends I would mention this guy who transplanted goat testicles into men to cure impotence. And a lot of people would ask me\, “Well\, did it work?” \n\n\n\nWell… no\, of course it didn’t. But I began to think about how much people want to believe in miracle cures. The weirder the better\, really. How “one weird trick to melt belly fat” is way better click-bait than “eat less to lose weight.” Who doesn’t sometimes wish the world was more interesting\, more magical\, more colorful than it really is? This is why the highest-rated Animal Planet program of all time was a fake documentary about mermaids. This is why Water Kirn falls for Clark Rockefeller. Why conspiracy theories are so compelling. And why we fall for quack doctors\, time and time again: they sell us a story we want to believe. \n\n\n\nI believe that more than any other single human quality\, it is our love of great stories that makes us so endlessly susceptible to being conned. We believe the stories we want or need to believe\, and we believe anyone who tells them to us. Con men know this. So do politicians\, propagandists\, pitchmen\, cult leaders\, televangelists\, pick up artists and manipulators of all kinds – including documentary filmmakers. \n\n\n\nAnd so\, NUTS! is not a film that allows us to sit back and laugh at the dummies who fell for Brinkley’s bullshit. Instead\, it’s a film that shows we are all those dummies. Unlike Brinkley\, however\, I seduce you\, and then I show you how I did it. Brinkley’s story is not presented as the object of a neutral nonfiction gaze\, but as an opportunity for viewers to actively wrestle with the ethical and epistemological issues central to the narrative nonfiction form. \n\n\n\nAnd since I am on a mission to prove that watching documentary films isn’t just about eating your vegetables\, the viewer is supposed to have fun while they wrestle with this stuff. Ultimately\, NUTS! is still just a good old story about a big fat liar\, some goat balls and a million-watt radio station. Because who says smart films have to be boring?

DESCRIPTION:May is an exciting and busy month in the garden. For this workshop\, we will be reshaping beds that need sprucing\, planting a variety of seedlings\, and dividing perennials and moving the self-seeded plants to more convenient locations. \n\n\n\nPerennials are a great addition to the garden as they come back every year. At Collard City\, we enjoy a bountiful harvest of perennials such as rhubarb\, sorrel\, lovage\, walking onions\, asparagus\, horseradish and a variety of hardy herbs. Each spring\, we look forward to the return of these generous plants as they are the first to shimmy to the earth’s surface. This year\, we hope to expand our bounty\, by dividing clumps of perennials and transplanting to otherwise empty areas. The overall goal is to build a landscape that is largely self-sustaining and productive. Come and help us green the food desert\, one plant at a time!

She’ll be the guest of honor from 6:30-7:30 PM at an intimate dinner made from local\, farm-fresh and wild ingredients. The dinner is $105.30 to benefit our community radio station WOOC 105.3 FM\, where Amy can be heard daily hosting Democracy Now! at 3 PM and 5 PM.  \n\n\n\nThen\, at 7:30 PM Amy will be talking about her new book Democracy Now! Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America and the importance of independent media in these troubled times. Admission is by donation ($10 suggested\, $5 student/low income). \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Women Against War \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter\n\n\n\nAmy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!\, a national\, daily\, independent\, award-winning news program airing on over 1\,400 public television and radio stations worldwide. \n\n\n\nThe Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard honored Goodman with the 2014 I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also the first journalist to receive the Right Livelihood Award\, widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ for “developing an innovative model of truly independent grassroots political journalism that brings to millions of people the alternative voices that are often excluded by the mainstream media.” She is the first co-recipient of the Park Center for Independent Media’s Izzy Award\, named for the great muckraking journalist I.F. Stone\, and was later selected for induction into the Park Center’s I.F. Stone Hall of Fame. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of “skill sharing” on creative resistance\, including a Code Pink workshop led by Medea Benjamin. More tba. \n\n\n\nWhat is CODEPINK?\n\n\n\nCODEPINK is a women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. wars and militarism\, support peace and human rights initiatives\, and redirect our tax dollars into healthcare\, education\, green jobs and other life-affirming programs. \n\n\n\nWhat we do \n\n\n\nFounded in fall 2002 as a grassroots effort to prevent the US war on Iraq\, we continue to organize for justice for Iraqis and to hold war criminals accountable. We actively oppose the continuing U.S. war in Afghanistan\, torture\, the detention center at Guantanamo\, weaponized and spy drones\, the prosecution of whistleblowers\, U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine and repressive regimes. \n\n\n\nHow we do it \n\n\n\nRooted in a network of local organizers\, online supporters and generous donors\, with an emphasis on joy and humor\, our tactics include satire\, street theatre\, creative visuals\, civil resistance\, and directly challenging powerful decision-makers in government and corporations. And of course\, wearing pink! \n\n\n\nWhy women? \n\n\n\nCODEPINK is not exclusively women — we invite men to join us — but we are particularly eager to see mothers\, grandmothers\, sisters\, and daughters\, female workers\, students\, teachers\, healers\, artists\, writers\, singers\, poets and all outraged woman rise up and oppose the global militarism. \n\n\n\nCODEPINK thus emerged out of a deep desire by a group of American women to stop the United States from invading Iraq. The name CODEPINK plays on the former Bush Administration’s color-coded homeland security alerts — yellow\, orange\, red — that signaled terrorist threats. While Bush’s color-coded alerts were based on fear and were used to justify violence\, the CODEPINK alert is a feisty call for people to “wage peace.” \n\n\n\nSince then CODEPINK has become a worldwide network of women and men committed to working for peace and social justice. We have become famous for confronting the warmongers\, whether in the halls and hearing rooms of Congress\, the national conventions of both the Republicans and Democrats\, George Bush’s fundraisers\, the publicity tours of Karl Rove\, Condi Rice\, Donald Rumsfeld and others\, and Nancy Pelosi’s house. \n\n\n\nPink action principles• Nonviolence: We are committed to peaceful means of protest and resolving conflict when executing our actions\, in coalition work\, and within our internal process and relationships.• Clear Goals: We will define CODEPINK’s unique niche in our community (creative protest\, cultivating women’s voices\, etc.) and set attainable goals for local projects that will further CODEPINK’s peace mission.• Communication Guidelines: We write\, speak and listen with respect to all. Disagreements or disappointments are opportunities to practice peaceful and productive communication with each other. We keep our criticisms concise\, specific\, constructive\, and focused on future improvement. We affirm a culture of appreciation\, thanking and valuing all our activists and acknowledging donations\, co-sponsorships\, and other support.• Responsibility and Teamwork: We work in teams\, sharing tasks and responsibilities\, and building skills\, together. We agree to be responsible for something only when we’re 100% sure we are going to do it.• Diversity and Tolerance: We embrace feminist principals of cooperation\, problem-solving\, critical thinking\, compassion\, analysis and processing. We will speak up against racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, classism\, ageism\, and other forms of oppression and prejudice. We will work towards a deeper understanding of our own power and privileges\, and seek to cultivate a diverse local group with connections to the array of social justice groups in our cities. We highly recommend that every activist read this piece about recognizing privilege\, entitled “Unpacking the Invisible Backpack.”• Resource Sharing: Our logos\, photos\, and the downloadable resources on our website are free for local groups to use. Central staff can help send email alerts for local organizers. Local groups can endorse or cosponsor local events without seeking permission from the central staff. Local groups are autonomous and are encouraged to take on national campaigns.• Messaging: We will work to make the messages on our banners\, flyers\, and public/ social media statements clear and potent. We aim to amplify our work through positive media coverage — for example\, sending press releases\, conducting press calls and liaising at events\, providing talking points for participants\, media training for local groups\, etc.• Global Community: CODEPINK’s work to end the war in Iraq was shared by 250 local groups in the US and a dozen international groups. The solidarity between CODEPINK-ers in the US and overseas strengthens our work to end US wars and drone strikes\, curtail government surveillance\, bring justice to war victims\, and reduce militarism worldwide. CODEPINK has taken delegations to Cuba\, Iran\, Israel-Palestine and other conflict zones to promote global and cultural engagement and awareness. We also participate in the Global Day of Action on Military Spending\, international forums on war and peace\, and other peace and diplomacy-building events.• Long Term Vision: We commit to working for a better world\, for the long haul. SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with WOOC 105.3FM: Program and Audience Development
DESCRIPTION:Slowly but surely we’re getting underway with local programming at WOOC 105.3 FM now that our technical issues have more or less stabilized. (At the moment we’re running syndicated news & public affairs shows from Pacifica Radio during drive time\, and a reggae/world music mix otherwise.) We’re hoping to start local programming Monday-Friday afternoons SOON with a block of regional news and public affairs daily for an hour (or two\, depending how our capacity develops) across the week during drive time.  \n\n\n\nAs a final workshop for this season\, the focus will be on Program and Audience Development. For now\, we’ll be focusing all of our radio resources on developing these collectively-produced drive time programs. The content will be local and regional with a global perspective\, taking on the kinds of issues we’ve been highlighting over the past decade with our Sanctuary programming.
