SUMMARY:Exhibition in the Underground Gallery: "Invisible: The Crisis of LGBT Youth Homelessness" by Photojournalist Samantha Box
DESCRIPTION:Across America\, a disproportionate share of the tragedy of youth homelessness falls on those who identify as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Mostly poor and minority\, many of these young people come from homes marred by instability\, conflict\, abuse\, neglect\, and parental drug use. Coming out as LGBT often was the final factor that forced them from their homes. Caught at the intersection of race\, poverty\, gender expression and sexuality\, these young adults fight to find their way through a society that chooses not to see or help them. In 2005\, Samantha Box began photographing the residents of Sylvia’s Place- New York City’s only emergency shelter for homeless LGBT youth. Its 30 beds comprise about half of the shelter space specifically designated for the thousands of homeless young LGBT people in the city. Using the shelter as a “home base\,” she spent countless hours with these young people\, bearing witness to hidden and intimate aspects of their existence. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is on view from October 1 through December 18\, 2010. An artist reception will be held on November 19\, in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Youth Media Sanctuary which will feature a LGBTQ Human Rights Vigil and a Hip Hop Concert.

Experience desert defiance and womanly power as Malian diva Khaira Arby and her band invoke the mystery\, history\, and heart of Timbuktu\, live in concert!  Inspired by her cousin Ali Farka Toure\, Arby turns to her mixed Berber and Songhai roots and draws on a sweet mixture of desert blues and recording sophistication\, blending ripping electric guitar with the forefather of the banjo and funky drum breaks with the traditional percussion of the scraper and the calabash.

SUMMARY:"2012: Time for Change" Screening
DESCRIPTION:2012: Time for Change (2010) presents an optimistic alternative to apocalyptic doom and gloom\, directed by Emmy Award nominee João Amorim. The film follows journalist Daniel Pinchbeck\, author of the bestselling 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl\, on a quest for a new paradigm that integrates the ancient wisdom of tribal cultures with the scientific method. As conscious agents of evolution\, we can redesign post-industrial society on ecological principles to make a world that works for all. Rather than breakdown and barbarism\, 2012: Time for Change (2010) heralds the birth of a regenerative planetary culture where collaboration replaces competition\, where exploration of psyche and spirit becomes the new cutting edge\, replacing the sterile materialism that has pushed our world to the brink.
