SUMMARY:Exhibition in the Underground Gallery: "Invisible: The Crisis of LGBT Youth Homelessness" by Photojournalist Samantha Box
DESCRIPTION:Across America\, a disproportionate share of the tragedy of youth homelessness falls on those who identify as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Mostly poor and minority\, many of these young people come from homes marred by instability\, conflict\, abuse\, neglect\, and parental drug use. Coming out as LGBT often was the final factor that forced them from their homes. Caught at the intersection of race\, poverty\, gender expression and sexuality\, these young adults fight to find their way through a society that chooses not to see or help them. In 2005\, Samantha Box began photographing the residents of Sylvia’s Place- New York City’s only emergency shelter for homeless LGBT youth. Its 30 beds comprise about half of the shelter space specifically designated for the thousands of homeless young LGBT people in the city. Using the shelter as a “home base\,” she spent countless hours with these young people\, bearing witness to hidden and intimate aspects of their existence. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is on view from October 1 through December 18\, 2010. An artist reception will be held on November 19\, in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Youth Media Sanctuary which will feature a LGBTQ Human Rights Vigil and a Hip Hop Concert.

SUMMARY:Author Scott Christianson\, "The Last Gasp: The Rise and Fall of the American Gas Chamber"
DESCRIPTION:In The Last Gasp: The Rise and Fall of the American Gas Chamber (2010)\, award-winning writer Scott Christianson tells a dreadful story that is full of surprising and provocative new findings\, taking us to the dark side of human history in the first full chronicle of the gas chamber in the United States. More than a book about the death penalty\, this compelling history ultimately reveals much about America’s values and power structures in the twentieth century. Christianson will be introduced by David Kaczynski\, the Executive Director of New Yorkers For Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the brother of the “Unabomber” Theordore Kaczynski. \n\n\n\nCo-Sponsors: Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace\, Amnesty International USA\, Local Group 361\, Capital Punishment Research Initiative of the University at Albany School of Criminal Justice\, New York Civil Liberties Union\, Capital District Chapter\, New York State Defenders Association\, Market Block Books of Troy\, The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany\, New Yorkers for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.
