DESCRIPTION:Media Nodes was born of award-winning photographer Sean Hemmerle’s desire to document the news media in the midst of an historic transformation. “People throw around this word all the time\, mostly disparagingly: ‘oh\, the media\,’ and ‘media spin\,” he says. “That made me think: who is the media? And what about the media? I wanted to put a face on these media nodes\, the places where news is ‘made’ if you will.” This world-premiere exhibition of the eight-year project Media Nodes was originally published in the Columbia Journalism Review. It is a view behind the curtain\, beyond the front page\, to the interior landscape of an industry in transition.  \n\n\n\nOn view 10/6/11-12/3/11.

For adults and teens\, with veteran documentary filmmaker and educator Jim de Séve\, an award-winning documentary producer and director. He teaches film production classes at Union College.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe The Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:In 2003\, on the eve of the Iraq war\, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and\, as she saw it\, heading for self-destruction. After several years\, traveling over five continents\, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story.  \n\n\n\nFrom Iran\, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression\, to Burma\, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship\, moving on to Brazil\, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars\, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon\, where photography\, music\, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard\, filmmaker Iara Lee’s Cultures of Resistance (2010) explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.
