She has toured the world bringing her own special sound to numerous jazz festivals\, displaying her versatility as a tourist\, saxophone player\, and pianist. An internationally acclaimed musician\, Jane Bunnett is known for her creative integrity\, improvisational daring and courageous artistry. \n\n\n\nJane Bunnett’s continuing quest to seek out and present musical talent untapped and unheard beyond the confines of the island has led her down many roads\, and it was during a trip 30 years ago to Havana\, Cuba she discovered then-unknown musicians and formed the all-star ensemble Maqueque (pronounced “Mah-Keh-Keh” meaning “the energy of a young girl’s spirit.”) Their 2014 self-titled debut CD was awarded a much-deserved Juno Award for Best Group Jazz Album of the Year. \n\n\n\nJane Bunnett’s assembly of all-star Cuban musicians\, the sextet which includes herself and five extraordinary young females\, ensured a spotlight for their fluid\, seamless music. “Everything I’ve done\,” Jane says with pride\, “has led up to this group\, which is the perfect vehicle for now.” Maqueque currently includes Yissy Garcia on drums\, Danae Olano on piano\, Magdelys Savigne on bata drums and congas\, Elizabeth Rodriguez on violin and vocals and Celia Jiminez on bass. Maqueque often features guest stars Melvis Santa on percussion and vocals\, as well as Dayme Arocena assisting on vocals. \n\n\n\n“Oddara” fills the air with intoxicating spirit of joy and electricity\, and live\, their shape-shifting enthusiasm is contagious\, thrilling audiences in clubs and festivals throughout North America. Their smiling faces and lively attitude radiates their spirit\, and speaks to their love of performing. And audiences wouldn’t have it any other way – Maqueque’s fresh\, inventive\, no-compromise music earned the group a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center\, a rare encore at the Chicago Jazz Festival\, and four sold out nights at Chicago’s legendary Jazz Showcase. SUMMARY:Trio da Kali
DESCRIPTION:Trio Da Kali is a group of outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots (hereditary musicians). The group features Hawa Kasse Mady Diabaté\, Lassana Diabaté\, and Mamadou Koyaté. Formed of voice\, ngoni\, and balafon\, the Trio aim to bring a contemporary twist to ancient and neglected repertoires. To coincide with their British “Making Tracks” tour\, their label World Circuit released their debut EP\, which is out now on CD (available exclusively via the World Circuit shop and on tour) and download. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Trio da Kali\n\n\n\nHawa Kasse Mady Diabaté\, daughter of legendary Kasse Mady Diabaté\, is the singer of the Trio\, and has one of the finest griot voices in Mali. She has been compared by some to Mahalia Jackson (America’s great gospel singer). At home\, Hawa performs mainly on the wedding circuit\, singing at parties held on the streets of Bamako (the main context in which most musicians in Mali make a living).  \n\n\n\nThe most distinctive feature of the Trio is the balafon\, and Lassana Diabaté\, formerly of Afrocubism and Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra\, is one of Mali’s most astonishing players. Its cascading lines\, rippling and percussive riffs\, and buzzing gourd resonators\, are a familiar element in many Malian ensembles\, but here for the first time the balafon is the lead instrument.  \n\n\n\nThe youngest member of the trio is bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté – the eldest son of world-renowned Bassekou Kouyaté. Still in his early 20s\, he is one of Mali’s most creative musicians of the new generation. \n\n\n\nTrio Da Kali only came into being in late 2012\, but already they have performed at a BBC Prom\, the Theatre de la Ville in Paris\, and at the London Jazz Festival. They were formed specifically to develop a project with The Kronos Quartet; David Harrington (of Kronos) describing it as ‘one of the most beautiful collaborations Kronos has had in our first 40 years’.  \n\n\n\nRecorded in Bamako\, produced by Lucy Durán (‘Toumani & Sidiki’\, ‘New Ancient Strings’\, ‘Segu Blue’) for World Circuit\, the 5 track EP is the first time this repertoire has been showcased on a release for an international market.
