DESCRIPTION:Salif Keita\, known as the “Golden Voice of Africa\,” is undoubtedly one of the most influential and important artists in African music. \n\n\n\nA once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the Golden Voice of Africa in a small listening room—one of the world’s most extraordinary singers\, Afropop pioneer\, and a direct descendant of Sundiata Keita\, founder of the 13th century Malian empire.  \n\n\n\nA benefit for the Salif Keita Global Foundation program on albinism \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn an albino\, Keita was cast out by his family and ostracized by his community as his albinism was considered a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. He overcame these obstacles to become one of Africa’s most celebrated singers. \n\n\n\nIn 1973\, Keita joined the group Les Ambassadeurs – later called Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux – and rose to international fame in the 1970’s. \n\n\n\nIn the early 1980’s Salif began a solo career and has gone on to become a superstar in Afropop music. \n\n\n\nKeita’s music blends together the traditional griot music of his Malian childhood with other West African influences from Guinea\, the Ivory Coast\, and Senegal\, along with influences from Cuba\, Spain\, and Portugal. \n\n\n\n“A giant on the world music scene” – PBS

DESCRIPTION:Meklit’s music is imbued with poetry and multiplicity\, from hybridized sounds of Tizita (haunting and nostalgic music) drawing from her Ethiopian heritage\, to jazz\, folk songs\, hip-hop and art rock. She aptly describes her music as emanating from “in-between-spaces.” \n\n\n\nListening to Meklit transports us to the post-national space of Africa and America\, inspiring us to bridge the frontiers between language\, tribes and disciplines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeklit is an Ethio-American singer\, composer\, and cultural instigator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her music sits on the hyphen line\, born as equally from San Francisco as it is from Addis Ababa. \n\n\n\nMeklit’s third record comes out this spring on Six Degrees Records and is produced by multi-GRAMMY winning artist/songwriter Dan Wilson (Adele\, John Legend\, Dixie Chicks). Deeply inspired by Mulatu Astatke (the Godfather of Ethio-Jazz)\, the songs shine with pentatonic melodies\, Ethio groove\, and a singer-songwriter’s poetic core. This is immigrant music and American music all at the same time. \n\n\n\nMeklit is a TED Senior Fellow and her TED Talk\, The Unexpected Beauty of Everyday Sounds\, has been watched by more than 1 million people. \n\n\n\nShe has received musical commissions from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts\, the MAP Fund and has toured extensively across the US\, UK\, and East Africa.
