SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Caroline Wollard: “Forming Gift/Free/Mutual Aid/Barter Networks”
DESCRIPTION:Think through creating networks with community asset mapping and resource-sharing using Woolard’s Idea Lab\, offering tools and strategies for participants to sustain The Sanctuary’s environmental campus and beyond. Artist and organizer Caroline Woolard begins the workshop with a quick presentation on seven solidarity economy models that establish local wealth and community resilience. Participants will then work in small groups to brainstorm ways to refine and adapt these models to the Sanctuary and the surrounding neighborhood.  \n\n\n\nThe models Caroline will present include local currency\, worker-owned businesses tied to anchor institutions\, real estate investment cooperatives (based on http://NYCREIC.com )\, barter-based learning spaces (based on http://tradeschool.coop )\, and mutual aid agreements for sacred operations (based on Loomio.org\, PublicLab.org\, AS220\, and WOW Cafe Theater). \n\n\n\nSponsored by iEAR Presents! \n\n\n\nMore about the Sanctuary’s goals\n\n\n\nOur community is already very much involved in bartering\, gifting with the intention of supporting each other\, building out the work of the Sanctuary – and moreover\, building physical infrastructure and a place to grow\, live\, and provide resources to help each other. We welcome new ideas Caroline and other will bring to the table here!! \n\n\n\nA little bit of background: we have/own/develop seven lots on the block in North Troy on 6th Avenue between Glen Avenue and 101st Street. This is an economically devastated area and we have purchased abandoned lots transforming them into community gardens\, soil remediation centers\, environmental education hubs\, presentation areas\, food forests\, an aquaponics center\, media centers and art galleries\, and a soon-to-come citizen science center. All of these areas serve the very local community and beyond. We consider this our “campus\,” if you will – and focus this living learning campus on issues of social and environmental justice. \n\n\n\nMore about Caroline Woolard\n\n\n\nCaroline Woolard (b. 1984) is a New York-based artist who co-creates projects and systems for the solidarity economy. Her feminist\, transdisciplinary method connects discrete objects to aligned contexts of circulation. For example\, Woolard builds sculptures for barter only as she also co-creates international barter networks; she fabricates model Shaker housing and she also co-convenes organizers of community land trusts; she co-creates card games for the commons as she also directs a study center for group work. \n\n\n\nThe multi-year institutions Caroline Woolard has co-founded include barter networks OurGoods.org (2008-2016); TradeSchool.coop (2009-2017); cross-sector organizing network SolidarityNYC (2009-2013); cultural equity advocacy group BFAMFAPhD.com (2014-2017); and the NYC Real Estate Investment Cooperative (2015-2017). Recent commissions include WOUND\, Cooper Union (2016); and Capitoline Wolves\, Cornell University (2016)\, and MoMA Studio: Exchange Café (2014). SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Sculpting a Water Retentive Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Create several garden beds on contour using a simple A-frame level. The resulting swales stop\, spread\, and sink water\, maintaining optimal hydration in the landscape… \n\n\n\nA NATURE Lab workshop with Collard City Growers gardener and coordinator Christian Grigoraskos \n\n\n\nAs environmental stewards in our community\, water security is at the forefront of our consciousness. We are constantly looking for ways to preserve and respect water as a precious resource (BECAUSE IT IS!). Utilizing rainwater barrels and closed-loop aquaponic systems are a couple of ways that we plan to manage our water supply in the garden\, but there are techniques for building efficient irrigation systems directly into the landscape. \n\n\n\nJoin us to learn how to build the most open-source\, democratic\, and FREE irrigation system out there: SWALE & BERMS. \n\n\n\nThe resulting garden beds will become our community cooking greens patch: collards\, kale\, and chard — here we come! Participants of this workshop will leave with plans for building their own A-frame level and muscle memory to dig swales and berms in their own backyards. \n\n\n\nA “swale” is a level trench dug on the contour line that acts as a bowl of water for a thirsty landscape. A “berm” is a mound\, or garden bed\, on the downhill side of the swale that prevents collecting water from escaping. Together\, the swale and berm are a perfect duo that function to stop\, sink\, and spread rainwater. This system is\, as one article puts it\, “as old as the hills\,” and is an incredibly simple\, multi-purpose solution for hydrating surrounding plantings\, mitigating stormwater run-off\, reducing erosion\, and replenishing and filtering water as it percolates back down to the water table.
