DESCRIPTION:A deep roots trio made up of guitarist and vocalist Pascal Danae\, Rafgee on sousaphone and drummer Baptiste Brondy\, blending French Caribbean and New Orleans’ musical styles for a contemporary Creole blues sound with an African flair. Named for Officer Louis Delgrès\, the band pays tribute to the forgotten hero\, a biracial man who spent his life actively resisting colonial forces in Guadeloupe and died in battle fighting Napoleon’s enforced reinstatement of slavery in 1802. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trio was founded by award winning Guadelupean composer and musician Pascal Danae who was inspired by  New Orleans jazz fusion\, and brought together drummer Baptiste (with whom he had played previously in the band Rivière Noire) and experienced jazz horn player Raphael ‘Rafgee’ Gouthière\, on a whim\, to produce a critically acclaimed\, radical roots group. The group sings mainly in Creole\, with dance worthy tracks that encourage pause and reflection. Their debut album Mo Jodi was released in 2018\, and can be purchased here.

SUMMARY:StoryHarvest With Rootbrew & Special Guest Jenny Marie and Derrick Horton & The Jay Street Band
DESCRIPTION:The eighth consecutive year of this community celebration\, with free music\, food and arts activities outdoors at Freedom Square. Just as farmers reap the harvest\, providing sustenance for all\, it is time to celebrate all our harvests–the results of seeds sown through art\, education\, agriculture\, tolerance\, and everything we do to build strong\, healthy\, tolerant communities. Expect fun\, Caribbean-inspired tunes from Rootbrew on the Freedom Square stage. With culturally entrenched music\, the group allows their lyrics to serve as a platform for issues plaguing the United States and beyond\, creating anthems of resistance. \n\n\n\nDuring the music there will be a free community meal\, created with veggies from our own Collard City Growers’ garden\, Dennison Farms and other local farmers as well as treats prepared by members of the community.   \n\n\n\nThanks to Unity House\, we’ll have free hamburgers and hot dogs\, fresh off the barbeque!  Cuisine prepared by Kitchen Sanctuary chefs will make magic with food from Collard City Gardens to add to the feast! \n\n\n\nCO-SPONSORS: Unity House\, NATURE Lab\, Team HERO / The Block Center\, Troy Bike Rescue\, Denison Farms\, Troy Zero Waste\, Transition Troy\, Urban Grief \, Cornell Cooperative\, GenVote\, OAO Inc. and more TBA! \n\n\n\nThis event is made possible in part by funding from the Barry Alan Gold Memorial Fund of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region\, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature\, hundreds of small contributions\, and volunteer labor. \n\n\n\nMORE ABOUT ROOTBREW: \n\n\n\nSprouted from the New York’s fertile Hudson Valley\, Rootbrew is digging into their own cultural history\, reaching across the ocean\, pulling it all together\, and putting out an exciting\, authentic sound centered around love\, positivity\, and passion.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is to say\, that in Rootbrew’s songs one can noticeably feel the influence of popular Caribbean\, South and West African styles while appreciating the clear connection to American roots music. \n\n\n\nThe lyrical messages delivered with finesse\, power and poise by vocalist Meg Riebesell range from simple love songs to politically charged songs about women’s movements\, immigrant rights\, and resistance\, as well as laments on war\, suffering\, and spirituality. \n\n\n\nThe band has a debut album and recently recorded Resistance EP available\, and has performed with bands such as Lakou Mizik (Haiti)\, Mamadou Kelly (Mali)\, and Mokoomba (Zimbabwe). SUMMARY:Roots for Resilience Exhibition Opening with Catherine Rafferty
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening Wednesday\, Sept. 26\, 6-7pm\, with photographer Catherine Rafferty! \n\n\n\nDuring her internship at The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, Catherine Rafferty photographed the images in this exhibition during the Uptown Summer 2018 program. Born in Albany\, she is working toward a BFA in Photojournalism at Rochester Institute of Technology. She is currently the photography editor for Reporter Magazine at RIT. Catherine’s interests are in telling stories of environmental justice\, gentrification\, immigration and health care. Her focus is on understanding communities and social relationships. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom monitoring eel populations in the Poestenkill\, to painting “poetic crosswalks\,” to leading a community design process\, the eighth season of Uptown Summer was filled with remarkable projects and exciting workshops. In partnership with the Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Justice programs\, the Sanctuary offered local teens a chance to learn hands-on skills while enriching their community. These experiences are captured in this extensive photo collection now on display in our Underground Gallery.  \n\n\n\nThe youth in these photos focused sharing stories of environmental justice and resilience. Working alongside scientists\, artists\, and community leaders\, they explored diverse realms including data analysis\, seed-saving\, and the health of Hudson River fish. The 2018 Uptown Summer crew left their mark on the neighborhood with the new NATURE Lab Environmental Education Center. With the help of the Troy Architecture Project\, we’ll be transforming a long-abandoned building in North Troy into a grassroots science resource for the neighborhood. Design ideas generated by the Uptown Summer youth employees and other community members will provide the framework for the project as it moves forward. The building and gardens will house workshop and meeting spaces\, a science lab\,  a community kitchen\, and much more! \n\n\n\nCatherine was a team member of a small army of interns who contributed their support this summer\, from Rochester Institute of Technology\, Concordia University\, Skidmore College\, the University at Albany\, Sage College\, and Rensselaer.
