DESCRIPTION:Something is in the water! Learn how and what life’s like under the water surface. Includes hands on manipulations and live critters to explore. Hope you like getting your hands dirty! Open to all ages. \n\n\n\nAbout the NATURE Lab: \n\n\n\nNorth Troy Art\, Technology\, and Urban Research in Ecology (NATURE) Lab is a volunteer-led urban ecology education initiative. Artist/scientist teams work to empower the community with knowledge about the local ecosystem and the skills to intervene in creative ways. Our programming includes community workshops\, public art installations\, artist residencies\, research activities\, and after school activities. We seek to combine global expertise with local knowledge to address the issues that are unique to the North Troy ecosystem and community.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for open hour workshops every Tuesday from 4-6pm at at 3334 & 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, NY 12180!

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Byron Rich: Hormone Hacking- Harvesting Endocrine Disruptors
DESCRIPTION:Working with simple DIY tools and protocols\, participants will learn to extract and identify estrogenic compounds in liquids ranging from waterways to common foods. We will construct our own scientific tools using readily available components that we will use to collect estrogenic compounds from the water and liquids around us. \n\n\n\nThrough this workshop\, participants will learn about the complex interrelationships between industrial agriculture and production\, food systems\, ecosystems\, human bodies and the bodies of organisms that live in affected regions. The workshop will illuminate how our bodies are not our own\, and whether there is emancipatory potential in subversively using industrial waste products. Funded by Vollmer Fries/HASS/RPI. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nByron Rich is an artist\, professor\, and lecturer born in Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada. His work exploring speculative design\, biology futures\, and tactical media ecology has been widely shown and spoken about internationally. He was the recent recipient of an Honorary Mention from Ars Electronica (2017)\, and runner-up at the Bio-Art & Design Awards in 2016. He pursued a BFA in New-Media from The University of Calgary before finding himself in Buffalo\, New York where he received an MFA in Emerging Practices at The University at Buffalo. He now teaches Electronic Art & Intermedia at Allegheny College in Meadville\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to prof. Kathy High\, from RPI’s Humanities Arts and Social Science department\, for her collaboration with the Sanctuary for Independent Media on this workshop though her Biopunk class which is part of the NEA funded Bioart Futures and (Forgotten) Urban Ecologies: a series of artist Residencies/workshops presenting contemporary art working with living systems\, sustainable practices\, and using biological techniques and materials. Biopunk is an upper level art and science seminar combining lectures\, critical readings\, hands-on workshops and diy methodologies that teaches the language\, aesthetics and techniques of working with biological materials. Emphasis will be on acquisition of a working knowledge of the history and contemporary investigations of the microbiome and how to culturally explore these scenarios of living amongst multiple diverse communities and species. Influenced by the “punk” era and the beginnings of punk resistance\, as well as the biohacker community\, emphasis will also be placed on developing critical and transgressive thought around ethical issues and cross-disciplinary experimentation in art – such as art/science collaborations\, art as research.

DESCRIPTION:Four women\, virtuosic musicians\, and educators–Lara Klaus\, Daniela Serna\, Mafer Bandola and Sara Lucas – each from a different country and culture of the Americas\, sisters in song\, rhythm and spirit. A multinational ensemble of women building community through sound. With powerful vocals\, often accompanied by Pat Swoboda on the bass\, LADAMA delivers an utterly unique musical experience. LADAMA flows from the electric to the acoustic\, from Spanish to English and Portuguese\, and from the high plains of Venezuela to the Colombian coast. Their art proves that borders are meaningless\, transporting us to a future where the world communicates across continents and cultures\, through sound and story. \n\n\n\nMore on LADAMA:LADAMA’s debut\, self-titled album\, released in the Fall of 2017\, could not be more timely; nowadays both Latin America and the United States\, in fact the world\, are deeply in need of projects that transcend boundaries and defy norms. This is precisely what their debut album\, crafted carefully on a journey through Brazil\, Colombia\, Venezuela and New York\, represents. LADAMA’s new self-titled album transcends space\, time and borders. Hatched across continents and language by the members of the group themselves\, it delivers a fresh take on a myriad of traditional\, Pan-American rhythms all coming together seamlessly into LADAMA’s unique blend of enthralling sounds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhe songs in this collection emit an electric pulse and energy that are truly global in concept and vision. In its deepest essence\, LADAMA’s inaugural album is a reflection of what it means to communicate across the Americas. Written\, composed\, arranged and produced by the dynamic foursome\, the album is an organic yet modern expression of authenticity across cultures. \n\n\n\nLADAMA met on the road in 2014 while touring Los Angeles\, Arizona\, and New Mexico as part of the prestigious OneBeat Program. Between individual performances\, leading youth workshops and public music-making events\, \n\n\n\nLara\, Daniela\, Mafer and Sara uncovered a common dream of building communities through sound and empowering women and youth through music. Reimagining South American and Caribbean styles like cumbia\, maracatu\, onda nueva and joropo and blending them with soul\, R&B and pop\, LADAMA creates a new sound all their own.
