SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Nathalie Dubois Calero:  Hacking GMO - Pant Tissue Culturing
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will take a piece of plant and multiply it in vitro.  \n\n\n\nLearn how to multiply plants\, including Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).  We’ll also learn a lot about what Genetically Modified (GM) plants are\, the rules around multiplying them\, and how they interact with us and our environment (or not). \n\n\n\nOpen to 18 and + (we will use sharp instruments) \n\n\n\nSign up here! \n\n\n\nMentor: Nathalie Dubois Calero \n\n\n\nOne foot in art\, one foot in science (I have a PhD in plant science)\, the head in stars\, I try to keep an uncertain balance. I worked with microalgae\, installed as a mobile or on a split object\, with airborne microorganisms -growing over a 10-foot specific fabric\, floating\, –  or with micro propagated cultures of genetically modified plants\, plastic\, found phones etc\, to create a man-made man. My works are a reflection about the world we construct around us to “protect” us\, the man-made nature we try to impose to the other organisms\, and to ourselves\, our fears of any organisms – specially the smallest and invisible ones- we cannot dominate or control\, but that are intimately in us. \n\n\n\nBorn in France and living in Montreal\, Canada\, I am affiliated to Milieux\, the Institute for Arts Culture and Technology at Concordia University\, in the Lab Cluster. I am an inviting researcher at  in the Art department as\, and at Nature lab -Troy. \n\n\n\nAbout the NATURE Lab: \n\n\n\nNorth Troy Art\, Technology\, and Urban Research in Ecology (NATURE) Lab is a volunteer-led urban ecology education initiative. Artist/scientist teams work to empower the community with knowledge about the local ecosystem and the skills to intervene in creative ways. Our programming includes community workshops\, public art installations\, artist residencies\, research activities\, and after school activities. We seek to combine global expertise with local knowledge to address the issues that are unique to the North Troy ecosystem and community.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for open hour workshops every Tuesday from 4-6pm at at 3334 & 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, NY 12180!

Then\, at 6pm\, there will be a screening of the groundbreaking documentary Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope\, a film examining the emerging science around toxic stress and how it negatively alters the brains and bodies of children if left untreated. Following the screening\, Urban Grief will host a panel discussion on the subject of trauma and resilience\, with Damonni Farley\, Jerry Ford Jr.\, Jennifer Livingston and Carrie Reif. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Urban Grief. Urban Grief  works to increase awareness about the emotional and mental health impact that results from exposure to violence and death\, by providing crisis/bereavement support\, to break down the walls of isolation and fear by connecting community members and caregivers with each other as a resource and mutual support. \n\n\n\nABOUT THIS FILM“…an engrossing study of how Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACEs) can be linked to destructive behavior and medical diseases”–Matt Fagerholm ROGEREBERT.COM \n\n\n\nThe child may not remember\, but the body remembers. \n\n\n\nResearchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. She is the former director of SNUG (formerly known as Cure Violence) and has over 25 years of human service experience. She is an experienced speaker and trainer\, facilitating trauma-informed workshops such as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)\, and community events\, and faith-based workshops aimed at creating healing spaces and empowering community members through information about trauma\, grief\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nPANEL: \n\n\n\n\nDamonni Farley: Founder of Common Thread Consulting Family and Community Relations Coordinator for the Schenectady City School District. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDeacon Jerry Ford\, a husband\, father and leader; has seen his share of trauma and adversity. he lost his mother and father at a young age. He was raised by a loving aunt\, but found himself in the streets looking for the love he never received from his parents and eventually ended up in prison. After his 3rd prison stint\, he saw himself on a path toward life in prison or death. Deacon Ford’s story of resilience and hope is impacting nations across the nation.
