SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Dylan Rees: Using Fish Poo to Feed a Family
DESCRIPTION:NATURE Lab educator Dylan Rees will lead a workshop on Fish Poo. Aquaponics uses fish poo to grow plants. See a small tabletop system\, learn how it works\, and how to build your own. \n\n\n\nAbout the NATURE Lab: \n\n\n\nNorth Troy Art\, Technology\, and Urban Research in Ecology (NATURE) Lab is a volunteer-led urban ecology education initiative. Artist/scientist teams work to empower the community with knowledge about the local ecosystem and the skills to intervene in creative ways. Our programming includes community workshops\, public art installations\, artist residencies\, research activities\, and after school activities. We seek to combine global expertise with local knowledge to address the issues that are unique to the North Troy ecosystem and community.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for open hour workshops every Tuesday from 4-6pm at at 3334 & 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, NY 12180!

DESCRIPTION:It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Join us at the Sanctuary for the seventh annual North Central Holiday Justice and Peace Celebration. We’ll have free portraits (special appreciation to Brenda Ann Kenneally and her team)\, arts activities\, music by Derrick Horton & The Jay Street Band plus Men of Faith (MOF)\, free food from Unity House\, Troy Bike Rescue bike give-away\, Fruit and Berry Propagation with Collard City Growers\, the lighting of the tree at Freedom Square (at the corner of 101st and 5th/6th Avenue)\, and more!! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBack by popular demand! Free photos from internationally recognized photographer Brenda Ann Kenneally for families in the North Troy area! Call (518) 272-2390 to reserve a time. Together\, we will celebrate the holiday season! While families wait for their turn getting their photo taken\, we’ll have arts activities in the main Sanctuary space. \n\n\n\nBrenda Ann Kenneally is a Guggenheim and Soros Criminal Justice Media Fellow. She attended the University of Miami\, where she earned a B.S. in sociology and photojournalism\, and New York University\, where she received an M.A. in studio art. Kenneally has focused on how families get lost in a culture of drugs and prison. She searches for ways to motivate inner-city women to empower themselves\, despite their limited social and economic opportunities. Kenneally’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Ms. Magazine\, among other publications. In 2000\, she won the Community Awareness Award from the National Press Photographer’s Association\, and in 2001 she was awarded the International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon\, Spain. Kenneally’s work in Brooklyn has received support from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund\, the Mother Jones Documentary Fund\, and the Nikon Sabbatical Grant\, in addition to the Open Society Institute. Kenneally has worked with us exhibiting her photos\, teaching photojournalism workshops\, and curating several exhibitions. \n\n\n\nMore about Men of Faith: \n\n\n\nMen of Faith is a local North Troy band with Mac Henderson\, Bojack Theore\, Pastor Barber and Deacon James. \n\n\n\nMore about Derrick Horton and the Jay Street Band: \n\n\n\nDerrick Horton and the Jay Street Band grew out of downtown Schenectady and play all over the Northeast. They are a Motown-style party band is dedicated to community.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab and Collard City Growers Workshop: Fruit and Berry Propagation
DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic of sticks to propagate fruiting shrubs: grow our food forest with elderberries\, blackberries\, raspberries\, grapes and cuttings you bring to experiment with! \n\n\n\nAfterward\, join us inside the Sanctuary for the Holiday Celebration! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCollard City Growers is a volunteer-run food justice project where we connect arts and culture to growing a wealth of annuals and perennials including vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, natural dye plants\, grains\, and fruit trees. We share our homegrown harvest at neighborhood events that host hundreds of community members and passersby who come in search of nutrient dense food or “the best lettuce [they’ve] ever tasted.” During off-season\, we share our harvest in the form of preserved greens\, sauerkraut\, pickles\, and hot sauce.
