SUMMARY:NATURE Lab: Health Autonomy Clinic - Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Health Autonomy Clinic with Dr. Francis Coughlin and JJ Luceno. As part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s growing NATURE Lab\, JJ Luceno and Dr. Frank Coughlin are working to establish a central space in Troy to share health skills\, provide basic integrative care and explore ways to build networks of community health. Though caring for our elders\, our children\, or cooking soul-nourishing food for family or friends may not be deemed ‘real’ healthcare\, they know that in fact\, it’s what holds us together and keeps us sane. Let’s bring our skills together to build a space where creative\, joyful health is possible and accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, November 12th we will be hosting the first in a series of “Health Autonomy Clinics.”  At the core of the clinics will be tangible services and a place to connect. The clinic will include basic first aid materials\, blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. We hope to offer childcare during the hours. We are looking for practitioners that would like to offer skills or interactive demos during the clinics\, as a first step to building a health network in the region. \n\n\n\nThere will be an Open House from 4-5pm and a Community Conversation from 5-6:30pm. From 6:30-8:00\, we’ll roll up our sleeves and develop strategies for our next session.  \n\n\n\nMore about our session leaders: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Frank Coughlin is originally from the Hudson Valley\, but is now living in New Lebanon. He works as an ER physician at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He helps run the “Health Autonomy at the End of Empire” podcast and is a member of the Lebanon Health Assembly. Coughlin is excited to build on the generations of strong communities in the Capital Region and to foster health autonomy as a liberatory practice. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJJ Luceno is usually found tight-roping between the plant world and the story universe. She has worked as an educator in many settings: in the woods and urban gardens with children\, in shelters with survivors of domestic violence and facilitating health\, and in sex and puberty education with families. She believes in the undeniable need for liberation medicine and hopes that storytelling and skillsharing can help us reimagine the ways we can care for ourselves and each other. Luceno grew up in the Hudson Valley and now lives in New Lebanon\, NY.

DESCRIPTION:Learn tips and tricks for editing with appropriated footage from this award-winning nonfiction filmmaker! Penny Lane is an award-winning nonfiction filmmaker who was named one of Filmmaker Magazine‘s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and a Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Award winner. Her most recent feature-length documentary HAIL SATAN? recently debuted at Sundance and released by Magnolia Pictures in 2019.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPenny has been awarded grants from the Sundance Institute\, Catapult Film Fund\, Creative Capital\, Cinereach\, TFI Documentary Fund\, Jerome Foundation\, LEF Foundation\, NYSCA\, Experimental Television Center\, IFP and Puffin Foundation. She was named “Most Badass!” at the Iowa City Documentary Film Festival in 2009. She received her MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her BA in American Culture and Media Studies at Vassar College. She has taught film\, video and new media art at Colgate University\, Bard College\, Hampshire College and Williams College. SUMMARY:Riverkeeper Community Scientist Celebration\, with Screening of "Source to Sea"
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the 2019 Riverkeeper Water Quality sampling season and the volunteer partners who make it possible to gather samples from the Hudson River Watershed from May through October\, with a focus on those working in the Upper Hudson River and Mohawk Delta. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere will be a Water Quality Sampler Award\, a presentation\, and a screening of the short film A Living River from National Geographic filmmaker Jon Bowermaster and featuring Dan Shapley. Afterwards\, we will explore how Riverkeeper’s Water Quality Program\, our partners\, and community scientists answer the question\, “How’s the water?” \n\n\n\nThe Riverkeeper Water Quality team and The Sanctuary for Independent Media staff will be on hand to talk about their work. Bring your friends\, family and community members to celebrate the hard work of our Community Scientists and our shared commitment to clean water. \n\n\n\nThis event is FREE and open to all and we will provide some “stone soup” as well! \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper was established in 1966 and was first known as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association when local fishers formed the group to reverse the effects of pollution by factories on the river. They have three missions: “guarding your waterways\, defending clean drinking water\, and finding solutions.” While there have been significant strides to clean the river\, much work is still needed and budget cuts in government funding and climate change are causing these missions to get harder. “Riverkeeper’s vision is of a Hudson teeming with life\, with engaged communities boating\, fishing and swimming throughout its watershed.” They are well on their way. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo learn more about Riverkeeper and this event\, listen to this interview done with the organizers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Riverkeeper.
