SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Kayla Coldsnow: Waste Compost
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about where our waste comes from\, the issues associated with it\, and how to reduce it! We will talk about refusing\, reducing\, reusing\, recycling\, and composting. Techniques will span from cheap or even money saving to expensive\, easy and sometimes easier to hard\, and from no to large effects on your health. There will be an apartment-style worm composting bin present to see as well.  \n\n\n\nKayla Coldsnow is a 5th year biology Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research investigates the many ways humans are impacting our vital freshwater ecosystems\, including a variety of contaminants and invasive species. In addition to her research\, Kayla also loves to complete STEAM outreach with a variety of organizations including NATURE Lab. At NATURE Lab\, she has held workshops that focus on freshwater ecosystems\, careers involving STEAM\, composting\, and our waste.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab: Yoga Sanctuary with Heartspace
DESCRIPTION:Let Nikki Rogers guide us in yoga practice dedicated to healing arts and mindfulness. Nikki has devoted the past decade of her professional life to promoting the health\, and wellbeing of the community of Albany. She began her personal journey into yoga in 2005 and in 2012 a 200-hour Hatha Yoga teacher training opened the door to her dream of sharing yoga with the Albany community as a pathway to stress relief and a healthy lifestyle. Nikki’s classes could be described as “beginner plus.” She designs her classes specifically to be done by people with little experience with the practice\, while still providing a challenge to all skill levels. Linking breath and movement for a relaxing practice\, Nikki safely guide students into poses and tailors each session to the individual needs of each of her classes.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Alex Rivera: The Art of “Mockumentary” Production
DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies that blur the lines between documentary and fiction\, from script writing to media activism to studio production to post-production. Alex Rivera is an award-winning filmmaker whose work explores issues that impact the Latino community\, particularly on subjects of labor\, immigration\, and gender. He is best known for his science fiction film\, Sleep Dealer (2008)\, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival\, and has made a number of mockumentaries particularly focusing on the transnational struggles of immigrants. Preceding the workshop at 6pm is a Community Meal and Resource Exchange: connect and broaden the network of resistance\, with community organizers from Capital District Border Watch\, ICE-Free Capital District\, Troy Sanctuary\, Saratoga Immigration Coalition (SIC)\, and Extinction Rebellion Capital Region. At 7pm there will be a screening of Rivera’s acclaimed mockumentary\, The Infiltrators\, a film where an amazing group of undocumented youth–Dreamers deliberately get detained by Border Patrol in order to infiltrate a shadowy\, for-profit detention center.  \n\n\n\nThis Be The Media! workshop is sponsored by iEAR Presents! and the School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer\, made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. The Infiltrators\, director by Alex Rivera and Christina Ibarras\, is a film about a rag-tag group of undocumented youth—Dreamers—who deliberately get arrested by Border Patrol to infiltrate a shadowy detention center. Nearly a decade ago\, filmmaker Alex Rivera first encountered the DREAMER activist group the National Immigrant Youth Alliance. Captivated by their grit and determination\, he began filming The Infiltrators. The NIYA\, Obama-era youth led movement\, focused on stopping deportations. As their vision and creativity grew\, their civil disobedience actions also escalated and became more daring. Rivera’s vision also grew from imagining a short documentary to seeing the potential for a longer film when the activists decided to get detained to stop deportation from within. \n\n\n\nWith the initial intent of helping Argentinian Claudio Rojas\, the undocumented youth infiltrated the Broward Detention Center in Florida by sending Marco Saavedra inside to gather intelligence\, spread information to other detainees and to coordinate a plan to free them. Later Viridiana Martinez joined him infiltrating the female side of the detention center. \n\n\n\n“The Infiltrators” documents the work of the activist DREAMERS as they navigate inside the detention center\, outsmarting the agents and organizing to free detainees. “The Infiltrators shows we are not powerless. We can fight back and be effective\,” said Martinez. We’re taking our agency back\, she continues. “We need allies and we need people to have our back and to be standing beside us but to not speak for us.” \n\n\n\nUnable to shoot inside the actual detention center\, directors Rivera and Cristina Ibarra\, opted for mixing genres and experimenting with adding scripted material. “The story needed an innovative approach because it’s about people who go into a place where you can’t film\,” said Rivera. \n\n\n\nUsing memory workshops with Saavedra\, Martinez and Rojas\, as well as the Freedom of Information Act\, Rivera and Ibarra worked meticulously to recreate the sounds\, colors and textures of the detention center. They also worked hard to hire actors who physically resembled their counterparts and could embody their essence. \n\n\n\nThe film is a testimony to the steadfast commitment of the DREAMERS\, the detainees they served and to the power of the Latinx community’s vision and heroism. “We’re here to push back and to tell a story in which immigrants are hacking the system and are smarter than their opponents\,” explains Rivera. “Immigrants not as victims\, but as leaders\, as visionaries.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Co-Sponsors:\n\n\n\nCapital District Border Watch: The scope of this committee will be to monitor the situation at the border and respond with direct action to human rights\, humanitarian crises\, and militarization at the border. We also see ourselves creating educational events and sharing information from Amnesty International\, ACLU\, local organizations working at the border\, and other partners involved in immigration and human rights. We might also partner with a local organization at the border to facilitate local material aid and volunteer partnerships. We consider ourselves a subcommittee of ICE-free Capital District and we seek to support and coordinate with other local immigration\, refugee organizations. \n\n\n\nICE-FREE Capital District is a newly-formed organization committed to protecting families and defending immigrants in the Capital District of New York State.We are composed of residents of all backgrounds who want to see the presence of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement removed from our towns and cities. We advocate for the complete end to collaboration with ICE from police and municipal agencies. All residents\, regardless of status\, should feel free and comfortable utilizing public services\, and should not fear raids or threats of detention and deportation in their homes\, their workplaces\, or their communities. We work to advance Sanctuary legislation at city and county levels. We work to accompany and defend immigrants who are facing deportation. We work to advance state legislation that would protect and strengthen immigrant rights. \n\n\n\nThe Saratoga Immigration Coalition\, a network of civic groups\, faith communities and concerned individuals\, seeks to foster\, through support\, education and advocacy\, a community that is welcoming to all immigrants without regard to legal status. \n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion Capital Region: We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown\, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making. SUMMARY:Christoph Irniger’s Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:The quintet Pilgrim\, founded by Zurich-based tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger\, has over the years become one of the most exciting ensembles in young European jazz. They present their fourth recording\, Crosswinds\, in which there is a certain ambiguity. “Some compositions are freely improvised\, while others are completely notated\, yet most lie in between\, with an elasticity that reflects a life of freedom\, where informed choices are made spontaneously.” The group was formed in 2010 with five members: Christoph Irniger\, tenor sax; Stefan Aeby\, piano; Dave Gisler\, guitar; Raffaele Bossard\, bass; and Michi Stulz\, drums.
