DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID rates and concern for community safety\, this event has been CANCELED.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening with radioactivist Norm Stockwell\, publisher of The Progressive. Previously\, for over 20 years\, he served as WORT Community Radio’s Operations Coordinator in Madison\, Wisconsin. He also coordinated the Iraq Journal website in 2002-2003. In 2011\, he regularly reported on protests in Madison for Iran’s Press TV and other outlets. His reports and interviews have appeared on Free Speech Radio News\, Democracy Now!\, and AirAmerica\, and in print in Z Magazine\, the Capital Times\, AlterNet\, Toward Freedom\, the Tico Times\, the Feminist Connection\, and elsewhere. He is co-editor of the book Rebel Reporting: John Ross Speaks to Independent Journalists.

DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID rates and concern for community safety\, this event has been CANCELED.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Documentary Across Platforms\, noted scholar of film and experimental mediaPatricia R. Zimmermann offers a glimpse into the ever-evolving constellation of practices known as “documentary” and the way in which they investigate\, engage with\, and interrogate the world. Collected here for the first time are her celebrated essays and speculations about documentary\, experimental\, and new media published outside of traditional scholarly venues. These essays envision documentary as a complex ecology composed of different technologies\, sets of practices\, and specific relationships to communities\, engagement\, politics\, and social struggles. Through the lens of reverse engineering―the concept that ideas just like objects can be disassembled to learn how they work and then rebuilt into something new and better―Zimmermann explores how numerous small-scale documentary works present strategies of intervention into existing power structures. Adaptive to their context\, modular\, and unfixed\, the documentary practices she explores exploit both sophisticated high-end professional and consumer-grade amateur technologies\, moving through different political terrains\, different platforms\, and different exhibition contexts. Together these essays demonstrate documentary’s role as a conceptual practice to think through how the world is organized and to imagine ways that it might be reorganized with actions\, communities\, and ideas.

DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID rates and concern for community safety\, this event has been CANCELED.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Nothing But Love\, her soulful and timeless song-cycle of folk\, pop\, world\, blues\, reggae\, and jazz-tinged originals\, singer-songwriter Jana Herzen (who happens also to head up the Multi-GRAMMY®- winning Motéma label\,) reaches new heights as a musical storyteller\, composer\, and guitarist.  Supported by an ace band led by world-renowned jazz bassist Charnett Moffett\,  Herzen’s poetic groove-solid songs surprise at each turn as they juxtapose isolation\, loss\, and melancholy\, alongside eye-winking fun\, romantic abandon and deep soul redemption.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Concert:\n\n\n\nHerzen will perform at The Jazz Sanctuary with bassist Charnett Moffett (co-producer of her album) and drummer Corey Garcia. Herzen and Moffett will also preview some songs from their upcoming duo project\,  ‘Round the World (out 5.29.20 on Motema). \n\n\n\nHerzen’s sophisticated style has been compared to such artists as Eva Cassidy\, Susanne Vega\, Sting\, Leonard Cohen\, Paul Simon\, Bonnie Raitte. Shawn Colvin\, Joni Mitchell\, Norah Jones\, Melody Gardot\, Carole King\, Karen Carpenter and even Bob Marley.
