DESCRIPTION:Unearthing to Rewild\, Remember\, Look Forward\n\n\n\nWhat kind of biodiversity can lawn ecosystems support? This fall\, Lawn Lab offers a meditative audio tour for slowing down and tuning in to the urban rewilding taking place at the lawn next door to Media Sanctuary’s Collard City Growers. \n\n\n\nThe twenty minute audio tour guides you through simple activities for engaging with Lawn Lab’s six experimental plots before they go dormant for the winter. What was here before? What might be here in the future? A project of the NEXT EPOCH SEED LIBRARY\, it involves re-wilding interventions in institutional and residential lawns from seeds lying dormant in the soil. From plant-based sculptures and community science workshops to novel approaches to data collection and presentation\, the project offers multiple entry points through which to consider lawn habitats and their impacts on the communities—human and nonhuman—who live in and among them. \n\n\n\nSeason 1 (2018) took place in institutional and residential lawns throughout the city of Troy\, NY. Season 2 (2019) took place at Wheaton College in Massachusetts and Seton Hall University in New Jersey. The 2020 season was planned for plots at RPI\, The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and Radix Sustainability Center. It has been scaled back due to the pandemic\, to six plots in a lawn near The Sanctuary for Independent Media in North Central Troy. \n\n\n\nFollow project progress at #lawnredisturbancelaboratory. City Lab wrote about the project in September 2019: Uncovering the Seeds of a Post-Lawn Future. In August 2020\, Media+Environment’s “Mediating Art and Science” Stream published Ellie’s article about the project’s first season: The Next Epoch Seed Library’s Lawn Lab: A Public Experiment in Collaboration with Seeds\, Time\, and Weeds. Also in August 2020\, Ellie presented the project with a 5 minute lightening talk for the Ecological Society of America’s annual conference. \n\n\n\nEllie Irons is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn and Troy\, New York. She works in a variety of media\, from video to workshops to re-wilding experiments\, to reveal how human and more-than-human lives intertwine with other earth systems. Her recent work focuses on plants\, people and urban ecosystems in the so-called Anthropocene. She is a cofounder of the Next Epoch Seed Library and the Environmental Performance Agency. Irons received her BA from Scripps College in Los Angeles and her MFA from Hunter College\, CUNY in New York. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, where she is researching the intersection of socially engaged art\, community science\, and urban ecology as a means for envisioning and enacting multispecies solidarity in the face of climate chaos.

DESCRIPTION:A workshop focuses on learning the journey of Messiah Rhodes and being inspired to tell their own stories!  From traditional documentary to visions of the future\, Messiah is a filmmaker/prophet of our time: he will share from why Indy Media is important! The workshop will begin with Messiah’s growth as an independent media maker from his early work to his virtual reality documentary production today. Messiah will then focus on the workshop participants\, with primary attention to youth and POC media makers\, in a Q&A responding to their needs.  \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with TEAM Hero and Youth FX! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe The Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening and discussion of Against All Odds with filmmaker Messiah Rhodes followed by the panel with local incarceration activists Nicole Cook-Reed\, Thomas Kearney\, and Roni Minter. Against All Odds is a personal and also important social story about recidivism\, our criminal justice system and the effects on so many generations. It’s also a story of women surviving this broken system and ways we can support them. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening (7:00-8:00) will be a panel (8:00-9:00)\, “Incarceration in the Pandemic: Connecting the Dots\,” featuring local activists in Troy & Capital Region and NY State doing incarceration work\, with focus on understanding what Defund the Police means\, empowerment and access to services: Thomas Kearney\, RAPP [Release Aging People from Prison and the HALT Solitary (confinement) campaign; Roni Minter\, Sistas Healing Old Wounds\, Inc. and Freedom Unshackled; and Nicole Cook-Reed\, Freedom Unshackled. \n\n\n\nSponsored by iEAR Presents!\, YOUTH FX\, Team HERO\, The Coalition for Voter Education and Registration in County Jail\, and the School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer\, made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Film:\n\n\n\nMessiah Rhodes was just a kid when his mom\, Juanique Rhodes\, went to jail. Over the years\, she was incarcerated four times. In Against All Odds\, a two-episode documentary series produced in partnership with AJ+\, Messiah looks at issues that prevent women\, like his mom\, from breaking the cycle of incarceration.  \n\n\n\nJuanique and Messiah’s story isn’t unique. 1.9 million women are released from US jails and prisons each year\, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. When they get out\, they encounter numerous systemic obstacles preventing them from entering and thriving in society. There is no centralized support system for formerly incarcerated women\, and without a place to live\, with no family backing\, limited education and employment opportunities\, they are more likely to reoffend\, and get trapped in the US criminal justice system. 77 percent of women are rearrested within nine years of being released from prison.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Filmmaker:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI was born in Far Rockaway\, Queens\, and did not have an easy childhood. Separated from my parents at 4\, I was homeless and on my own by 16 when I discovered my passion for writing and filmmaking\, which has gotten me through some of life’s toughest times. I began my career in the film industry at 17 doing grip and electric work\, which helped me get out of the shelter and gave me independence. \n\n\n\nSince then\, I’ve built a steady foundation in independent video journalism\, filming and editing footage from the origins of Occupy Wall Street to the Black Lives Matter movement. I’ve worked for companies such as BET\, VICE Media\, and Democracy Now!\, and produced video for the New York City Department of Homeless Services. At my most recent job as an Associate Producer at VICELAND\, I pitched and hosted award-winning short documentaries that aired on VICELAND’s cable channel. I am creating video content that highlights marginalized voices\, stories\, and ideas\, and my work is socially conscious\, entertaining\, and enlightening. \n\n\n\nAbout the Panelists:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThomas Kearney is Capital Region Organizer for RAPP (Release Aging People in Prison Campaign). He is a formerly incarcerated individual who served almost 17 years in New York State DOCCS. Initially released in 2011\, four separate technical parole violations kept him ensnared in the system until December\, 2017. Thomas first began work attempting to affect the system in 2018 as Community Leader in the Albany Chapter of Vocal-NY. It was in rallying to end the racist War on Drugs and Mass Incarceration that he found RAPP. With RAPP\, he’s organized the Capital Region’s impacted families around RAPP’s Legislative Initiatives Of Elder Parole\, Fair & Timely Parole\, and a transformation of the Parole Board Commissioners to include Social Workers\, Mental Health professionals and other who have knowledge that individual personal transformation is real. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Cook-Reed from Freedom Unshackled. “My name is Nicole Cook-Reed\, and I am formerly incarcerated having served 10 straight years in prison. I am passionate about advocating for the systemic injustices of the currently and formerly incarcerated. I have drastically transformed my life for the better\, but it was not as a result of the criminal justice system; and I would like to continue to work to help change that. As we can’t truly expect to stop recidivism\, and the rapid rates of incarceration\, if the system isn’t designed to do so. Because of my own personal experiences\, and what I have built on my own in society; I have the platform to promote change\, and have made it part of my life’s mission into doing so.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoni Minter from Sistas Healing Old Wounds\, Inc. and Freedom Unshackled. “I’m a formerly incarcerated and I feel that there’s a need for systemic change within the criminal justice system. My focus has always been on the forgotten population of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. I live my life in the Fight for Justice; especially for those of us that were touched by the criminal system. I am also the founder of Sistas Healing Old Wounds\, Inc.\, based in Albany New York.
