Teamwork and a lot of cement

I went to the Sanctuary for Independent Media last Wednesday to help out with the hoop house. People told me they needed assistance with pouring cement. I thought to myself, “This should be fun, I’ve never worked with cement before.” I did not know what to expect.

Students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitutes service group, local neighbors, and volunteers of the Santuary attended the garden that day to help.

The truck arrived at around 2:30 P.M. with cement. Parking the truck in the garden was a challenge of its own. Volunteers were ready to pour cement, once the truck was parked. Our major challenge was to pour the cement within a certain time frame. Otherwise, we would be charged an additional fee for surpassing our allowed time. Time constraints forced us to work in a methodical manner. People were running back and forth between the cement truck with wheelbarrows and buckets.

Cement was poured into certain parts of the hoop house.

It was amazing to see the teamwork involved during this process. We accomplished our task with minutes to spare. Volunteers continue to work on the hoop house. Construction of the hoop house will be completed soon.
