Energy was electric Saturday April 2, 2016 in North Troy. People gathered from all over the country to celebrate the Sanctuary’s 10th year anniversary with a special performance by Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited and an African themed dinner.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Thomas Tofirenuika “Mukanya” Mapfumo is an award winning international musician and political activist, who was once exiled from his homeland. He then founded The Black’s Unlimited in 1978. Since he began his career he has shared the stage with Elton John and Bob Marley and played at Carnage Hall.
Saturday Mapfumo and his band graced North Troy with his talents. The concert hall was packed with people dancing and having a great time. Staff recorded the event which will later be released and available for viewing. The show went well into the night with audience begging for more and an encore was played.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Sanctuary’s newest venture, the WOOC 105.3 FM radio station which is on air now.
Mapfumo with his eclectic sound, contagious energy, free spirited nature, and commitment to the struggle for freedom was the perfect embodiment of all things Sanctuary.
