SUMMARY:Woven Bookmarks
DESCRIPTION:Lead by Ángela Bartlett with Azuré Keahi\n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will use small looms to weave bookmarks integrating plant fibers found in our local landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants have the option of bringing strands they’d like to weave into their project or share with others (Think of it as a fiber potluck!). Fibers that are a standard yarn thickness will be easiest to weave with. These might include fabric scraps\, ribbon\, hand-spun wool\, etc. If you want to add tiny embellishments like buttons\, shells\, beads or charms\, you are welcome to bring them – just make sure objects have a hole in them for adding them to the warp \n\n\n\nWoven Bookmarks is one part of a workshop series called Strands of Regeneration. Started by artists Ellie Irons and Azuré Keahi\, Strands of Regeneration is an eco-socially engaged project rooted in participatory art and creative practice centered on reciprocity\, building connections between humans\, the land and more-than-human life. Hosted on the Sanctuary’s inner city Eco Art Trail\, these workshops offer an opportunity to learn from local artists and makers whose creative practices are intertwined with care for land. Together\, we will weave plant fibers and other strands into art and objects from natural materials as an act of care and reverence for earth\, celebrating how this cycle of care supports our movements.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator Bio: Ángela Bartlett (@rain.over.earth) creates hand-stitched\, handwoven art and jewelry inspired by folk traditions and the natural world. With a BFA and years of farming and textile work\, she founded Rain Over Earth Studio in 2025 to craft pieces that connect people to the earth through color and fiber.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nStrands of Regeneration is supported by the Arts Center of the Capital Region’s Arts Thrive Grow grant program. Arts Thrive and Grow has been funded by New York State\, Kathy Hochul\, Governor. In this workshop\, participants will learn how to make adobe-style bricks using local clays and responsibly harvested plant matter from abundant non-native species such as japanese knotweed and phragmites. Participants are free to take their bricks home\, or to leave them to dry for PT. 2 of our brick series\, BYOB (Bring Your Own Brick)\, a building activation using a low-cost brick-placing robot to build a wall and planter in the backyard of NATURE Lab. \n\n\n\nThis is the first of two events from FSD.TEMP hosted by the NATURE lab\, made possible by the Capital Region Arts Thrive & Grow grant.  Arts Thrive & Grow is funded by New York State & the New York State Council on the Arts\, with support from Governor Kathy Hochul\, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins\, and local elected officials\, including Senators Jake Ashby and Patricia Fahy and Assemblymembers Scott H. Rain Location: People’s Health Sanctuary in NATURE Lab’s second floor (3319 6th Avenue). \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nVolunteer Application\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLucille Burr Grignon is an enrolled member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Nation and a direct descendant of the Menominee Nation. Muh-he-con-ne-ok being of the People of the Waters that are never still and Menominee being of the Ancient movers. She is a passionate Indigenous homesteader\, educator\, and advocate for her community and the world around her. Her family owns an Indigenous Homestead called Ancient Roots in Bowler\, Wisconsin. They research traditional gardening practices from their ancestors dating back to ages ago to the present day. They use a combination of methods to learn\, preserve\, grow\, seed save\, reconnect\, and share. They are working to reconnect to their cultural inheritance through the land\, plants\, medicines\, and wildlife. Lucy recognizes her connections to her Indigenous roots come in many forms\, from their language journey to the stories of their elders\, their people\, and their healing. \n\n\n\nThis event is one in a series related to the establishment and growth of a Medicine Garden in the NATURE Lab yard\, which is part of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail\, supported by an N.E.A. SUMMARY:Healing Herbal Balms at Collard City Growers with Flying Deer Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:When: Garden Open Hours\, 3:30-5:30 Friday May 26th (balm-making from 4:00-5:00)\, Where: 3337 6th Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for our regular family-oriented garden hours with a special guest! Emma Parrish Post of Flying Deer Nature Center will lead us in a balm-making activity from herbs growing in the garden. We’ll get hands on with some fresh garden herbs\, then see the results in a healing balm that will be available at the Sanctuary’s Freedom Fest on June 23rd. Photo documentation below! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of our new NEA Our Town project Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue in North Troy\, NY.  Save the dates for future Flying Deer Nature Center collaborations with our Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project! \n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 23 at Freedom Square: Flying Deer Healing Herbs table at Freedom Festival\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 15th\, 2023 at Freedom Square: Stockbridge Munsee Story-telling workshop with spiritualist\, musician\, artist\, historian\, and sharer of knowledge Shawn Stevens (Red Eagle) and Stockbridge Munsee youth \n\n\n\n\nMORE ABOUT FLYING DEER NATURE CENTER \n\n\n\nFlying Deer Nature Center (FDNC) is a nonprofit wilderness school and community dedicated to mentoring children\, youth\, adults\, and families in deep connection to nature\, self\, and others. \n\n\n\nSince 1996\, FDNC has offered nature-immersion programming for people of all ages\, through school and homeschool programs\, summer camps\, corporate curriculums\, rites-of-passage experiences\, adult programs\, and outreach events.  \n\n\n\nOur work aims not only to teach naturalist practices and wilderness survival skills\, but also to foster in participants a lifelong relationship with nature and access to the gifts it brings: resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to listen deeply to ourselves and to others. We all need the benefits of connecting with the natural world and\, in like measure\, nature needs our care. This deep and reciprocal relationship with the earth is at the heart of our mission.

DESCRIPTION:what: an opportunity to share plant abundance! \n\n\n\nhow: bring your extra seedlings / saplings and trade with someone else for something new – perennials\, annuals\, house plants\, anything goes! You don’t have to bring plants to take plants. \n\n\n\nwhy: a nice excuse to hang out in the garden with other families\, neighbors\, and local plant enthusiasts while preparing for the growing season. \n\n\n\nThis is an event for the community and gardeners to get together and exchange seedlings for the season. Stop by to pick up some seedlings that you might want for your garden\, drop off any extra flats that you don’t have room for\, or just come on over to hangout and say hi 🙂 \n\n\n\nAnd remember\, all plants that you give and take are FREE! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Blitz of the L-Lot: Permaculture in North Central!
DESCRIPTION:Join us!  \n\n\n\nWe have a semi annual Blitz of the L lot\, which is at the South End of the alley on Glen Street and is one of CCG Garden Mentor Christian Grigoraskos’ favorite places on the Sanctuary campus.  With a bit of care each year\, we have been ushering this once abandoned space into a beautiful and productive Food Forest\, a very unique sort that is largely been dictated by what is already there and has come in naturally. Includes Plant Identification!  Please bring gloves if you have them! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA message from Christian: \n\n\n\nMay you live in Wild times\, with Wild Spaces.  \n\n\n\nEcology capitalizes on disturbance (dissed-urbance) and when humans intervene with guided observance a paradise is born…so join us for our biannual Blitz of a patch of land We call the L lot because of its L shape and because of the deep Love we have for all our Botanical allies that inhabit it.  Each growing season we give just a little bit more support to the plants we want to see grow while utilizing the surrounding biomass of support species that grow rampant in our climate offering their bodies to the cycle of soil life.  \n\n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will cover many permaculture principles and practices such as:\n\n\n\n\nPaying attention\n\n\n\nPlant identification\n\n\n\nSuccession planning\n\n\n\nChop and drop mulching \n\n\n\nPollarding and other radical pruning methods\n\n\n\nPicking up trash\n\n\n\nStaring at bees coming and going from their entrance\n\n\n\nImagining the possibilities based on our observations

SUMMARY:CCG Plant Swap Party!
DESCRIPTION:Join us (socially distanced\, of course!) to actively learn about garden propagation and division!  The fruits of our labor will fill the beds of Collard City Growers and swap plants with attendees! \n\n\n\n\nThis is an event for the community and gardeners to get together and exchange seedlings for the season. Stop by to pick up some seedlings that you might want for your garden\, drop off any extra flats that you don’t have room for\, or just come on over to hangout and say hi 🙂 Azure and Christian are generously providing Shiso\, Bronze Fennel\, Absinth\, Wormwood\, Wild Strawberries\, Anise Hyssop\, Bee Balm\, Garlic Chives\, Elderberry\, Lovage\, Rhubarb\, Willow cuttings\, Borage\, Irises\, Day Lilies\, and lots more.
