DESCRIPTION:Robot Workshop with FSD.Temp\n\n\n\nFor this follow up to the MYOB (Make Your Own Brick) workshop\, bring a brick or just watch and chat as a low-cost\, low-impact robot places bricks to create a wall and planter in the NATURE Lab yard.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBricks have shaped the industrial and visual language of Troy for centuries\, while advances in technology and manufacturing are shaping questions about our collective future. In part 2 of our brick series\, participants are invited to bring their own bricks to the NATURElab yard\, where a low-cost\, low-impact robot will use them to build a wall and planter. This event is an invitation to witness\, discuss\, and participate in the robot’s “work”.  The robot was built by FSD.TEMP\, a temporary creative group exploring the accessibility of complex and expensive technologies through experimentation\, hyper-local materials\, and community collaboration.   \n\n\n\nThis is the second of two events from FSD.TEMP hosted by the NATURE lab\, made possible by the Capital Region Arts Thrive & Grow grant.  Arts Thrive & Grow is funded by New York State & the New York State Council on the Arts\, with support from Governor Kathy Hochul\, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins\, and local elected officials\, including Senators Jake Ashby and Patricia Fahy and Assemblymembers Scott H. Bendett\, John T. Her work centers on the fabrication of architectural-scale\, multi-media interventions. She is a lecturer at the RPI School of Architecture.  \n\n\n\nDierdre Shea is a multidisciplinary object-designer investigating meaningful ecosystems in product and manufacturing through sustainable materials\, creative experimentation and novel technology. She is a founding industrial designer at Fun Stuff Design. \n\n\n\nRiley Studebaker is a lecturer at the RPI School of Architecture where he focuses on robotic labor embedded in the built environment.

SUMMARY:DE-FENCE Part 2: The Line Becomes a Territory 
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for DE-FENCE Part 2: The Line Becomes a Territory with Margaretha Haughwout\, who will lead participants in the creation of DE-FENCE\, a living participatory art installation at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. \n\n\n\nFor part 2 of DE-FENCE\, participants will help install deconstructed fence posts (specially carved with designs that emerge from ongoing community drawing exercises)\, and plant medicinal seeds and seedlings from the artist’s Food Forest Studio. We will continue to discover already existing medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, and discuss the ways that marginal medicinal plants can participate in the bioremediation and protection of the ecosocial communities around NATURE Lab. “The Line Becomes a Territory” is the header from a section in a forthcoming book entitled Ruderal Witchcraft by Margaretha\, co-written with Oliver Kellhammer\, and explores the ways that communities who want to resist the forces of capitalist accumulation can find power in\, occupy\, and expand the boundaries\, edge zones and fence-lines established by regimes of private property.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Margaretha Haughwout\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York. \n\n\n\nHaughwout’s personal and collaborative artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally\, most recently\, at Stadwerkstatt in Linz\, Austria\, the Pixelache Festival in Helsinki\, Finland\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco\, California\, and at Bennington College in Benington\, Vermont. Haughwout received her MFA from the University of California Santa Cruz. SUMMARY:September Healing Day (Campus-Wide Open House)
DESCRIPTION:People’s Health Sanctuary is excited to host our third and final Healing Day of the season as part of the Sanctuary’s Campus Wide Open House. Healing Day is a way to connect with community members\, healers\, providers and anyone invested in building a robust network for communal health across the Capital District.  As in July and August\, we will be offering services from holistic healers\, resource sharing by healthcare providers and service groups\, children’s activities\, and free food.  \n\n\n\nWe strive to “re-member” what community health can look like\, so we welcome community members\, and we will be offering healing work on donation basis including body work\, yoga\, and energy work. DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for a multi-sensory drawing and plant-sensing workshop with artist Margaretha Haughwout. We will discover medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, explore practices connected to territorial defense\, and sketch medicinal plants that have historically been used for the immune system. Participants will be given specially designed field notebooks where they can make observational notes and draw the medicinal plants they resonate with. With participants’ consent\, the creative results of this workshop will be repurposed and made a part of the permanent\, living DE-FENCE installation. This is Part 1 in the De-Fence series.  \n\n\n\nLocation: NATURE Lab courtyard at 3319 6th Ave. Meet at the back gate.  \n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · A Multi-Sensorial Drawing and Plant-Sensing Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York. \n\n\n\nHaughwout’s personal and collaborative artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally\, most recently\, at Stadwerkstatt in Linz\, Austria\, the Pixelache Festival in Helsinki\, Finland\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco\, California\, and at Bennington College in Bennington\, Vermont. Haughwout received her MFA from the University of California Santa Cruz. She is Associate Professor of Emerging Media at Colgate University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and from NEA Our Town “Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail” creative placemaking grant.  \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE Project \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE is a living installation and a series of community events at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. The living installation is built in relationship to NATURE Lab’s back fence and the other emerging food forest networks and sign systems in the newly inaugurated space. DE-FENCE is an offering of perennial medicinal plants that support the immune system of humans while also enabling mutual support of the plants themselves and their critter companions through nutrient\, structure\, and insect attraction/ repulsion. The planting design and labeling system emerges out of community conversations and observation processes with the artist. DE-FENCE conflates collective health with territorial defense in opposition to medical and legal conceptions of immunity that derive from notions of private property.

SUMMARY:Forensic River: Community Science & Water Justice with Isidora Fernandez
DESCRIPTION:Forensic River is a workshop with artist Isidora Fernandez where we will present a case for protecting life in our streams and rivers. We will also share the various methods of testing water we are involved in at NATURE Lab. We will ask participants to help us make strong arguments for the protection our waterways! This workshop is for all ages open to everyone!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this public workshop\, artist Isidora Fernandez uses the facilities at NATURE Lab to further understand the injustices of the legacy of urban industrial pollutants such as sewage contamination and microplastics. Part of Fernandez’s month-long residency at NATURE Lab\, this workshop compliments our Water Justice Lab Source to Estuary Program and contributes to our growing NEA-supported Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIsidora Fernandez studied social communication (PUC)\, graduated in Ecotourism Management (UNAB) and did a Masters degree in Scientific\, Medical and Environmental Communication at UPF-BSM. During the last years\, she worked coordinating the Arts&Science department of Science For Change as creative producer\, developing exhibits\, designing science experiences\, participatory workshops and creative data collection methodologies for citizen science studies. \n\n\n\nScience For Change is a Spanish organization based in Barcelona. They work on citizen science projects\, promoting collaborative science. \n\n\n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · Artist-in-Residence and the Legacy of Urban Industrial Pollutants in Hudson\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media.  \n\n\n\nProgram background: Isidora Fernandez is our first Rubin Family Foundation Artist Resident at NATURE Lab. She will be in residence between June 21-July 21 2023 to work with the North Troy community. This residency will help lay the foundation for the future of NATURE Lab in North Troy by creating collaborative partnerships and programs that lead to creative solutions around our mission for social and environmental justice.  \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab has distinguished itself as a space that embraces the interdisciplinary areas of art and science. These art/sci practices place a distinct focus on an experiential engagement with life\, seeking to catalyze innovative collaborations that draw attention to aspects of the natural world that might otherwise go unnoticed. This area of art/sci thinks about the role of science in society\, how we can all get involved\, what stories we tell\, and how to actively integrate social reflection and critical awareness. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab Coordinator\, Kathy High\, will lead this new initiative. This program promotes artists whose work focuses not just on art and science\, but also on some aspect of the political moment we are in\, acknowledging racial and environmental justice issues. Our focus this summer will be on Troy water quality. \n\n\n\nOn July 12 we will host a public workshop lead by artist Isidora Fernandez using the facilities at NATURE Lab to further understand the injustices of the legacy of urban industrial pollutants such as lead and microplastics.

SUMMARY:Medicine Garden: Earth Burial
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first event in a series related to the establishment and growth of a Medicine Garden in the NATURE Lab yard at the Sanctuary. Lead by artist Azuré Keahi\, we will be burying hand-sculpted ollas (clay watering vessels) and planting some of the medicines. \n\n\n\nThis living sculpture will feature four powerful plant allies growing among functional sculptural elements\, including slow-release watering vessels (ollas) and cut metal way-finding sign posts. With a focus on Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican medicinal traditions\, the included plants–catmint/Askaskwaamek\, joe-pye weed/Pkuwiimakw\, yarrow/Wtakiipakw\, and bee balm/Wteehaskwal–also have intertribal and cross-cultural resonance. The sculpture’s quadrant design\, with four growing beds arranged in a circle ringed by ollas\, provides a focal point for a series of plant and land-centric gatherings that honor Indigenous pasts and presents on this land as we dream and build towards Indigenous futures. This project is part of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail\, supported by an NEA Our Town Grant in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Arts Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarth Burial Performance and Workshop

In case of rain\, we’ll meet inside on the second floor.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a community meal at the People’s Health Sanctuary\, to learn more about what we’ve done so far\, and discuss what the PHS space can become. In addition to sharing a meal together\, we will introduce ways for interested folks to become more involved in the planning and organizing of the space\, including a series of Healing Days in July\, August\, and September.

There will be information about choosing your healthcare proxy\, drafting a living will\, and different funerary care options. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by People’s Health Sanctuary at NATURE Lab and organized by Veronica Maroulis.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorinne Carey\, co-moderator\, is a lawyer and a political and public affairs strategist who takes on bold public health initiatives backed by sound evidence and human rights principles. Her policy work is grounded in her long history in the harm reduction movement. She founded and directed the Harm Reduction Law Project\, and has also worked for Human Rights Watch and the New York Civil Liberties Union. She serves as the state director for Compassion & Choices in New York\, and also works as a political & public affairs correspondent for the Hudson Mohawk Magazine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVeronica Maroulis is a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a master’s in Business Analytics. After being introduced to the work of The Order of the Good Death and content by Caitlin Doughty via YouTube\, she has been fascinated by death and the macabre. Veronica is an advocate for alternative death care and death justice and wants to encourage thoughtful conversations about death to de-stigmatize the taboo topic. Death is an inevitability of life and Veronica wants to give people the resources so that they receive the death care they want and deserve.

DESCRIPTION:Where: 2nd floor of the NATURE Lab building\, 3319 6th Avenue. \n\n\n\nJoin us for for a Death Cafe\, an evening of discussions about death and how to make the most of life under the context that there is an end. The discussions will take place as a group and in breakout discussions at People’s Health Sanctuary in NATURE Lab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt a Death Cafe people\, often strangers\, gather to eat cake\, drink tea and discuss death. Our objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’. A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda\, objectives or themes. SUMMARY:A Sturgeon with A Purpose: Walk and Community Brainstorm
DESCRIPTION:Meet outside in the NATURE Lab yard at 3319 6th Avenue \n\n\n\nJoin artist D Colin for a walk on the Sanctuary’s campus to help envision how her project A Sturgeon with a Purpose will enliven our growing campus Eco-Art Trail. This community written generative storytelling mural project will culminate in a block-wide series of painted panels along the Sanctuary Campus. Participants will work with D to learn about and add to the story\, and imagine where the painted panels should be placed to tell the story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nD. Colin is a Haitian American multidisciplinary artist with an educational background in English & Africana Studies. She is a self-published author\, a dynamic performer\, a self-taught painter & maker of pretty things that make bold statements. Her mantra is Be inspired. Then inspire.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore about this project\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. Indigenous heritage\, the Mahicantuck (Hudson River) and its estuarine resources\, ground visitors to the land. The Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe are in partnership on this project\, which features Stockbridge-Munsee as well as other Indigenous artists and musicians\, eco-artists and bio-artists\, storytellers and muralists\, connecting Indigenous wisdom to visions for a future of healing and reparations. The Sanctuary Eco Art Trail is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town program.

SUMMARY:People's Health Sanctuary Seed Swap & Open House
DESCRIPTION:Where: NATURE Lab 2nd floor\, 3319 6th Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the People’s Health Sanctuary and Collard City Growers at NATURE Lab for a seed swap and open house to start building towards spring awakening and growth. Learn seed keeping methods from local gardeners\, acquire seeds to grow\, and bring your own seeds and stories to show and share. We’ll have food to enjoy together\, and a kiddo corner for the little ones\, and some take-home instruction kits for those of you new to seed-starting. There’s no need to bring seeds or have any knowledge of seed-keeping or gardening to attend–you can also join for company and conversation! We’ll also be joined by Danielle Peláez\, who will be tabling on behalf of Soul Fire in the City\, and will bring seeds to share! \n\n\n\nAs we build a network of communal health practice in the Capital Region\, keeping and tending seeds provides a vital link between the land and the food that nurtures us. This event is the second in a series of PHS open houses. Transitioning from the landscape of the Koʻolau Mountains to the Hudson Valley of the Northeast\, she began to explore earthwork as healing for herself and the surrounding community led by her commitment to food sovereignty and intersectional justice. Her stories of diaspora\,ʻāina-based healing and ancestral reunion have been published in The Greenhorns’: New Farmer’s Almanac\, Tropic Magazine\, and the Daily Yonder. Over the last decade\, she has nurtured The Sanctuary for Independent Media’s block-wide\, public food forest and demonstration garden\, Collard City Growers.
