*Poem workshop: Cara, a professional writer/poet, teaches the group different ways of writing letters, poems, stories, and notes.
-“Find Your Own Voice” by Jayne Cortez, is an inspiring poem Cara uses as an example of how unique each and every style of poetry is.
-The group works on their ever evolving scrapbooks by including writing about something they want to express about the world using metaphors and similes.
-The group makes a brainstorm web for the word ‘world’. What comes to your mind when you think the of the word ‘world’?
-The group picks out favorite words and phrases called ‘hot spots’ from their poems to add to to the word bank. Our word bank is a box where we collect words or “seeds” over time that we will use later to ‘plant’ into poems. ex) “my home is open as far as the night sky” and “the world is a growing person”.
*The group constructs poems about their homes titled “My Home” that they will be needle pointing with the photos of their homes.
*Cathy, Troy Historian, displays needle points from the 1800’s to show the group how they will be creating their very own victorian style needle points. Cathy also brought maps from 1858 of Troy. There was even a horse race track right across the street from The Sanctuary on 101st street! (In 1858 101st st was called Cemetery Avenue) Next, the historian actually takes the group on a historic tour of the neighborhood and shows them where the race track was, where iron workers lived, and other significant historic locations.
-She explains that Troy was a huge industrialized product producing area that caused a lot of environmental damage that is effecting the community today. The bike path was once a railroad. The iron on the railroad was protected with black ink like tar that eventually would be washed away down the hill polluting the river.
-During the tour of the historic neighborhood, the group brings along their tee shirt bags they made in yesterdays workshop, to collect found objects such as bottle caps, leaves, black and white objects, tins, cans, for the “Found Art Project”.
*The group ends the day working on their needle points of their homes and poems.
